Prompt 2

1970 Also. Choose a work of recognized literary merit in which a specific inanimate object (e.g., a seashell, a handkerchief, a painting) is important, and write an essay in which you show how two or three of the purposes the object serves are related to one another.

In the book The Picture of Dorian Gray the pictures purpose is to take responsibility for his actions and to show how his inner self. By taking responsibility for his actions there are no repercussions so he does what ever he wants. While he does what ever he wants his uglier self is shown in his painting, showing his dark side to the world.
The two purposes of the picture, to show his inner self and to take responsibility for Dorians actions are closely related because they both change the painting itself. The painting becomes more evil as he does representing his soul. While it takes responsibility for his actions by not letting any of the age show on his own face but appear in the painting.

  1. Emily-
I think you had great examples and followed the prompt well. But, you could dig deeper and talk about what the painting symbolizes. What is the point of the painting changing as Dorian's soul changes? What does that portray and how does that impact the characters? I think you could also build off of your examples by providing quotes from the book. Also, how do these two purposes you described connect to each others? In all, you did a great job, but continue to work on expanding your thoughts.

  2. I agree with Julie on this one, also. You have the right ideas, but make sure you're really looking at the rhetoric situation and writing a full essay. These are supposed to help prepare us for the writing section of the AP test (or that's what I thought they were for), so I would take full advantage of that! You did a good job of answering the prompt, but like Julie said, keep working on expanding these into real essays!

  3. This looks like a good start to a fairly interesting essay. You have a general idea of what you want to say, you just lacked organization. Before you begin writing, try to organize your thoughts so you have a solid foundation to work off of (just don't overdo it and run out of time like me).
